Where Can I Get Home Care Advice?

Transitioning to a new phase of live is always filled with challenges. Seniors often find that moving into assisted living centers to be the next “big phase” they are faced with. If you aren’t sure that you are ready to move out of your home, there are some things you can do. Turn to your doctor to find care home advice to help you understand what challenges you may face if you choose to stay home.

In-Home Help

Depending upon your physical and mental state, you may want to discuss in-home help. Some seniors rely on their family to help. You may consider discussing the situation with your children or grandchildren as they may be able to live with you and help. Others may be able to stop by daily to assist with housekeeping and other needs. There are also some great services available for seniors including:

  • Housekeeping services
  • Financial management services
  • Transportation services
  • Meals on Wheels
  • Contractor work for home modifications and maintenance
  • Nurses

Speak to your doctor about having a nurse check on you. This is extremely important if you struggle to take your medication on a daily basis. Your family can also hire a nurse to come and assist you each day to make sure your health is in adequate condition.

Medicare Assistance

Check with Medicare to find out what you qualify for. Many people can receive certain help through Hospice. If you have a different insurance provider, contact them to discuss your situation and what can be done. While they may not be able to pay for hospice, they may be able to afford other senior-care services like Meals on Wheels.

Senior Centers

Most communities have Senior Centers that are open 6-8 hours a day. These centers are incredibly valuable for information as they can provide you with a number of services from physical examinations, vaccinations, meals, games, and so forth. Senior Centers provide a wonderful place to get out of the home each day so you can interact with others. You will also have the chance to receive free bus or vehicle transportation to and from the center. Many of the Senior Centers provide great advice on where to find transportation services, financial assistance, health care services, and so on.

Day Programs

Similar to Senior Centers, day programs are operated by companies specializing in dementia care. They will bring a meal to the senior each day, and they can help to organize social activities. Many programs will take seniors to and from doctor appointments and other needs.

Home Care Agencies

Search for 24 hour home care agencies in your area. Your doctor should have several companies they can recommend. It is important that you search for services that are tailored to your needs. If you can do the basic at-home tasks like cooking and cleaning, perhaps searching for a company to provide transportation services is what you need. There are full-service agencies and independent providers. Determine what costs you can afford and what services will fulfill your needs.

Another place to find excellent advice is from other seniors. If you have a network of friends that already use senior care services, they can provide you with great recommendations.
